DBT Skills

Theo and many of the other therapists at Ambimistic Counseling have a strong background in Dialectical Behavioral Therapy (DBT) Skills. DBT skills are readily translated into traditional therapeutic approaches, providing a powerful accent to your treatment. Skills are categorized into four modules: Mindfulness, Distress Tolerance, Emotion Regulation and Interpersonal Effectiveness.

  • Mindfulness- Mindfulness skills will provide the foundational skills needed to increase your ability to stay present, waking up from rote and automatic behaviors. Mindfulness provides a strong base for engaging in actions that are aligned with our values and long term goals.

  • Distress Tolerance- These skills will support you in building your ability to tolerate painful emotions and coping with crisis situations where our emotional urges are very strong and dominant.

  • Emotion Regulation- With emotion regulation skills, you will develop an understanding of your emotions and the functions of emotions, while working on not judging your emotional experiences. You will also build the skills to change unwanted emotions both in the short term and long term.

  • Interpersonal Effectiveness- Interpersonal effectiveness skills will support you in setting healthy boundaries in relationships and becoming more assertive. You will also build your skill in perspective taking and work on the “give and take” of relationships.
